Tracing Thorvaldsen reintroduces Bertel Thorvaldsen as a central figure in European art and cultural history. The film unfolds the human story behind the marble – from modest beginnings in Copenhagen to becoming one of Europe’s most celebrated artists in Rome. Through letters, archival material, and the museum’s collection, both major narratives and small anecdotes emerge, including his relations to the Royal Court, women, and life in Rome. Art historians and contemporary artists contribute to understanding his lasting significance, while his work is placed in relation to early democratic ideas and European cultural exchange. With international co-production and distribution across Europe and Denmark, the film traces a Danish artist whose legacy extends far beyond national borders and continues to resonate today.
